Colombia electric vehicle sales surge by 221% in 2026
Electric and hybrid vehicle registrations in Colombia have seen massive growth in 2026. Between January and September, 39,784 electric units were registered, marking a 221.7% increase compared to the same period in 2025.
Tesla leads the market with 16,542 units, capturing 41.6% of the total market share. BYD follows in second place with 8,219 units, representing a 23% growth. Other notable performers include Chery, MG, and Chevrolet. The SUV segment remains the most dominant category in terms of demand.
Regional data shows significant activity in major cities, with Bogotá recording 20,707 electric vehicle registrations through September. In the Bucaramanga metropolitan area, the fleet of electric and hybrid vehicles has grown from 61 units in 2015 to 5,768 in 2026, with light trucks and SUVs making up the largest portions of the fleet.
Despite the surge in sales, experts highlight critical challenges regarding charging infrastructure. The Ministry of Mines and Energy estimates that Colombia will require approximately 20,000 charging points by 2030, necessitating investments between $255 million and $390 million to support the expanding market.
