Colombia enacts law to protect cyclists with stricter penalties
The Colombian government has enacted Law 2635 of 2026, known as ‘Ni Un Ciclista Más’ (Not One More Cyclist), to enhance protections for cyclists and pedestrians. A central provision of the law requires motorists to maintain a minimum lateral distance of 1.50 meters when overtaking cyclists or users of light electric personal mobility vehicles, such as scooters.
While failing to maintain this distance results in a fine, the law imposes stricter penalties if the maneuver causes injury or death. In such cases, a driver's license may be suspended for up to 10 years. The legislation also aims to improve infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists, implement road safety education programs, and ensure special protections for vulnerable populations, including women, children, and the elderly.
