Colombia Enacts Tree Law, Mandates Two Trees Per Employee

Colombia’s Law 2173, known as the Ley del Árbol, came into force with regulations requiring every company to plant two trees for each contracted employee. Firms must coordinate planting plans with environmental authorities and municipal governments, while the Ministry of Environment will manage a national registry and monitor compliance. The measure aims to restore ecosystems, protect water resources and counter deforestation, especially amid rising temperatures and El Niño effects. Jaime Andrés García Urrea noted, “Esta norma estuvo pendiente de ser reglamentada y ya está reglamentada…”. Organizations such as Masbosques are assisting companies and public entities in implementing the law.

In Bogotá’s Suba locality, the waste‑management firm Área Limpia announced an August 2026 pruning schedule for urban trees across multiple neighborhoods, including Santa Rosa, Toscana and Lech Walesa. The program, approved by the city’s Secretariat of Environment, seeks to maintain tree health, prevent hazards for pedestrians and traffic, and preserve public spaces. Work will proceed subject to weather conditions, and residents are urged to report risky trees via the city’s hotline.
