Colombia energy sector faces $7.9 trillion debt as Celsia reports mixed results
The Colombian energy sector is facing significant financial challenges, characterized by rising industry debt and mixed corporate results. José Camilo Manzur, president of the Colombian Association of Electric Energy Distributors (Asocodis), reported that total debt owed to distributors and marketers reached $7.9 trillion pesos as of July 2026. This figure includes $1 trillion in subsidies, $1.8 trillion in tariff option debts, $1.5 trillion from protected official users, and $3.6 trillion owed by the utility company Air-e.
In corporate news, Celsia reported ordinary revenues of $1.3 trillion pesos for the second quarter of 2026, a 2.7% increase compared to the same period in 2025. This growth was driven by higher demand in commercialization and network usage, which offset lower energy generation from reservoir plants. However, Celsia’s net profit for the quarter fell nearly 26% to $82.5 billion pesos. For the first half of 2026, the company's total revenue reached $2.62 trillion pesos, representing a 5.2% decrease year-over-year.
