Colombia expands digital infrastructure with data center boom
Colombia is experiencing a surge in digital infrastructure demand driven by the global artificial intelligence boom. The country currently hosts 25 operational data centers, with nine major projects presently under development.
A significant development includes a planned US$1.3 billion investment for a hyperscale campus in Tenjo, Cundinamarca. This facility is expected to cover up to 65 hectares and may require electrical power equivalent to the consumption of 100,000 households.
The rapid expansion in the Sabana de Bogotá region has sparked debates regarding the transition from agricultural and residential land use to massive computational hubs. Concerns have been raised by academics and activists regarding the socio-environmental impact, specifically the heavy demands on local energy grids, water supplies, and ecosystems.
