Colombia exporters anticipate U.S. tariff reductions

Colombian exporters are anticipating a reduction in United States tariffs, which could potentially drop from 12.5% to zero. Javier Díaz, president of the National Association of Foreign Trade (Analdex), indicated that the White House may grant Colombia trade treatment similar to that recently provided to Ecuador.

A key requirement for this reduction was the establishment of a local legal instrument to prevent the entry of goods produced through forced labor into Colombia. A regulatory decree has now been published for comment, which Analdex suggests clears the path for a U.S. decision. If implemented, the exemption would directly benefit 1,751 Colombian companies, providing relief to labor-intensive sectors such as the flower industry.

However, challenges remain regarding other tariffs imposed by Washington on steel, iron, and aluminum, which affect approximately 2,490 additional national exporting companies.
