Colombia extends coach Néstor Lorenzo's contract through 2030

The Colombian Football Federation (FCF) has agreed to renew Argentine coach Néstor Lorenzo’s contract, keeping him in charge of the national team until the 2030 World Cup. Lorenzo, whose record with Colombia includes 31 wins in 51 matches, a run to the Copa América 2024 final and qualification for the 2026 World Cup, will now oversee preparations for the 2028 Copa América, the South American qualifiers and the 2030 tournament.

His contract is set to expire on 31 July, and during the renewal talks the FCF faced a legal dispute over president Ramón Jesurún’s eligibility to remain on the executive committee. Meanwhile, several foreign federations from Europe and the Middle East have reportedly shown interest in Lorenzo’s services, although no formal offers have been confirmed. An assistant coach, Luis Amaranto Perea, has left the staff to become head coach of Independiente Medellín, prompting the federation to consider further changes to the technical team.

The decision follows Colombia’s exit in the round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup, where they were eliminated on penalties by Switzerland. The renewal aims to provide continuity for the national project after that performance.
