Colombia faces debates over presidential re-election and fracking
Colombia is facing significant political shifts under the administration of President Abelardo de la Espriella, who took office in August 2026. A recent political exchange between De la Espriella and former president Gustavo Petro has sparked a debate regarding presidential re-election. Petro challenged De la Espriella to reopen the possibility of re-election, a practice currently barred by Article 197 of the Constitution since 2015. Any such change would require a popular-initiative referendum or a constituent assembly.
Simultaneously, the new government is shifting energy policy by pledging to reopen the door to fracking. This marks a reversal of the policy held by the Petro administration, which had halted pilot projects in the Puerto Wilches municipality to prioritize an energy transition away from fossil fuels. While supporters argue fracking is necessary to bolster dwindling gas supplies, critics express concern over the environmental impact on local wetlands, waterways, and wildlife in the Middle Magdalena Valley.
