Colombia faces earthquake tragedy and diplomatic tension

President Abelardo De La Espriella has addressed the devastating earthquake affecting the Colombian departments of Valle del Cauca, Quindío, Risaralda, Caldas, and Chocó. According to the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD), the disaster has resulted in 265 deaths, 3,494 injuries, and 496 missing persons. The impact on infrastructure is extensive, with 11,347 homes destroyed, 140 buildings collapsed, and numerous schools, health centers, bridges, and airports damaged.

Amidst the domestic emergency, the administration has also sparked international controversy. President De La Espriella officially recognized Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights, a move that contradicts the consensus of the United Nations and much of the international community. This decision makes Colombia only the second country, following the United States, to recognize this status. While the Israeli Foreign Ministry welcomed the move, the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a categorical rejection, condemning the position and asserting that the Golan Heights remains an inseparable part of Syrian territory.
