Colombia Congress approves 634.9 trillion peso 2027 national budget

The Colombian Congress has approved the 2027 General National Budget, totaling 634.9 trillion pesos. The figure represents a 14.2% increase compared to the 2026 budget of 555.8 trillion pesos. The approval followed an intensive legislative session that extended into the early hours of Tuesday, October 20, 2026.

Key sectoral allocations include 93 trillion pesos for education, approximately 84.5 trillion pesos for health (which saw a 5 trillion peso increase during the legislative process), and 74.9 trillion pesos for defense. Conversely, the budget includes a reduction of 181.4 billion pesos for the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP).

The government, led by President Abelardo de la Espriella, projects a fiscal deficit of 9.4% of GDP for 2027. Finance Minister Miguel Gómez Martínez described the budget as a necessary step toward economic correction. The administration also plans to present a ‘Rescue Law’ to address the fiscal situation and reduce the deficit.

Despite the approval, controversy remains regarding a potential procedural error. Discrepancies were noted between the versions of Article 65 approved by the Senate and the House of Representatives. While some lawmakers argued the lack of reconciliation could invalidate the process, the government indicated it would proceed with the budget to ensure stability.
