South American regions face severe forest fire emergencies
Multiple regions across South America are facing severe forest fire emergencies. In Colombia, the department of Tolima is experiencing a critical situation, with President Abelardo de la Espriella reporting losses of $134,000 million and over 50,000 hectares affected. The government is elevating the status to a departmental calamity to facilitate aid for 2,660 affected producers. Additionally, Ideam has placed 274 Colombian municipalities on alert, with Tolima, Cundinamarca, and Nariño facing the highest risks. In Nariño, fires have already consumed more than 1,400 hectares of productive land.
In Argentina, the province of Catamarca is battling a major fire in Aconquija that has burned over 100 hectares, complicated by Zonda wind alerts. Meanwhile, in Ecuador, the Putzalahua hill in Latacunga has been impacted by fires, with authorities investigating potential agricultural burns as the cause. Emergency crews in Cotopaxi are working to control the flames and plan for reforestation efforts.
