Colombia faces high rates of workplace accidents and stroke treatment gaps
Colombia is grappling with significant health challenges related to workplace safety and cardiovascular emergencies. According to the Colombian Safety Council (CCS), the country recorded 128,288 occupational accidents during the first quarter of 2026, averaging approximately 1,425 cases per day.
Head injuries are a major concern within these statistics. Data from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) suggests that traumatic brain injuries account for 20% to 25% of occupational traumas, often caused by falling objects or impacts with structures.
Simultaneously, the healthcare system faces difficulties managing strokes (ACV). Cardiovascular diseases were the third leading cause of death in Colombia last year, accounting for 6% of total fatalities. While medical advancements like mechanical thrombectomy exist to treat ischemic strokes, the country currently operates only six specialized centers for stroke treatment, highlighting a critical need for faster diagnosis and improved access to specialized services to prevent permanent neurological damage.
