Colombia faces institutional tensions and political party decline

Colombia is facing institutional challenges regarding the independence of its branches of government and the stability of its political party system. Tensions have risen between the Executive and the Judicial branches, particularly following decisions by high courts and public questioning of judicial rulings. The World Justice Project’s Rule of Law Index recently placed Colombia four positions lower than the previous year, noting a decline in fundamental areas such as limits on government power.

Simultaneously, the country's political landscape shows signs of fragmentation and decline among traditional parties. The Liberal Party has seen a lack of leadership renewal, leading to the emergence of various splinter groups. The Conservative Party is experiencing a decrease in congressional participation and a struggle to introduce new figures due to established political dynasties. Additionally, the Centro Democrático party has seen a loss of supporters amid criminal investigations involving its founder and a perceived lack of new leadership.
