Colombia faces key economic and legislative challenges in late 2026

The Colombian government faces several key political and economic challenges in the final quarter of 2026. A primary focus is the approval of the 2027 General National Budget, valued at 634.9 trillion pesos, which is scheduled for congressional review between October 13 and 15.

Finance Minister Miguel Gómez has indicated that an economic rescue project will be presented to Congress within approximately 10 to 12 days. This initiative is part of a three-stage fiscal adjustment plan that includes the 2027 budget and the National Development Plan. Additionally, President De la Espriella has announced a project to reform the General Royalty System to facilitate large-scale infrastructure projects and prevent the fragmentation of resources.

Other legislative priorities include a competition law intended to distribute responsibilities between national, regional, and local governments following reforms to the General Participation System. The government also plans to introduce reforms to the criminal justice system and an anti-terrorism bill.
