Colombia faces pension budget deficit for late 2024

Colombia's Minister of Labor, Natalia López Fuentes, has warned Congress that the national government is facing significant budgetary difficulties regarding pension payments. The administration is currently navigating a deficit that threatens the timely disbursement of monthly payments for the end of 2024, specifically for November and December, where a 5 trillion peso shortfall has been identified.

Colpensiones currently requires approximately 58 trillion pesos to meet its obligations. The financial pressure is expected to persist through the end of 2026 and into 2027. One contributing factor to this fiscal strain is the 23 percent increase in the minimum wage, which has raised the expected state contribution by approximately 5 trillion pesos. The government is currently working with the Ministry of Finance to identify alternative funding solutions to ensure the stability of the pension system.
