Colombia faces massive legal claims as Carlos Ayala Corao leads Iidh

Colombia's National Agency for the Legal Defense of the State (Andje) faces significant legal challenges, with lawsuits totaling approximately 73.8 trillion pesos. Despite these risks, the agency reported a success rate of nearly 81 percent in 2025, avoiding over 545 trillion pesos in potential convictions. In the realm of international investment arbitration, the agency managed costs at an average of 2.5 million dollars per case, notably lower than the Latin American average of 5.6 million dollars. A significant milestone included a settlement with Aris Mining, which avoided an estimated 380 million dollar award through a transaction under the Canada-Colombia Free Trade Agreement.

In international human rights law, Venezuelan jurist Carlos Ayala Corao has assumed the presidency of the Inter-American Institute of Human Rights (Iidh), headquartered in Costa Rica. Ayala Corao, a former member and president of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, has a long history of defending human rights across the continent and currently leads the International Commission of Jurists.
