Colombia faces natural gas deficit amid falling production and reserves

Colombia is facing a growing natural gas deficit as domestic production fell by 12% in 2025. According to a report by Promigas, proven reserves have dropped from 3,164 gigapi cubic feet in 2021 to 1,717 gigapi cubic feet. This decline has increased reliance on imports, which accounted for 28% of the supply in early 2026 and reached 34% in August.

To address the shortage, Promigas has moved up the expansion of the SPEC regasification terminal to October 2026. Meanwhile, the Sirius offshore project in the Caribbean is viewed as a critical solution that could potentially quadruple the country's reserves. However, the project faces delays due to disputes over prior consultation with artisanal fishing communities in Taganga. While Ecopetrol has characterized the community's demands as extortion, local fishers claim the company is attempting to delegitimize them. In response, the Colombian government has announced plans to reform the prior consultation mechanism to prevent it from being used to indefinitely block priority energy projects.
