Centro Democrático rejects alliance with Salvación Nacional

The Centro Democrático party has officially ruled out forming electoral alliances with Salvación Nacional for the 2027 regional elections. This decision follows a period of escalating tension and public criticism between the two political groups.

The rift intensified after Enrique Gómez, director of Salvación Nacional, directed several criticisms toward former President Álvaro Uribe and the Centro Democrático, labeling the former leader a “social democrat” and describing the party as a “big catfish” in Colombian politics. In response, the Centro Democrático issued a statement expressing exhaustion with “constant disqualifications and a complacent attitude,” stating they have no interest in coalitions with those who maintain a “sectarian vision.”

Internal friction within the right-wing bloc has also seen members of the Centro Democrático, such as Representative Óscar Villamizar, launch personal attacks against Gómez, questioning his political history and accusing him of seeking private closeness while attacking the party in public. This political maneuvering occurs during the first months of President Abelardo de la Espriella’s administration as various factions begin positioning themselves for the 2027 electoral cycle.
