Colombia faces rising workplace costs and mental‑health concerns

A 2024 Annual Survey of Sick Leave shows common illnesses such as flu, colds and headaches are the leading cause of employee absence in Colombia, driving higher costs for employers and increasing the burden on the health sector. The surge in absenteeism has negatively affected productivity and forced companies to seek measures to cover staff shortages.

A recent National Mental Health Survey reveals a sharp increase in anxiety, depression and social isolation, with diagnoses nearly doubling since 2015. A Bogotá councilor warned that "mental health cannot keep waiting" and called for reinforced public policies, expanded access to psychological and psychiatric services, and coordinated action among national and local governments, the health system, schools and communities.

Together, the data underscore growing health challenges that strain both the labour market and public wellbeing in Colombia.
