Colombia faces wildlife and livestock crisis amid fires and drought

Colombia is facing a severe environmental and agricultural crisis driven by forest fires and extreme weather conditions. The National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD) reported active fires across several departments, including Tolima, Valle del Cauca, and Norte de Santander, as of late August. These fires are destroying critical habitats, food sources, and shelters for local wildlife.

In the Huila department, the livestock sector is under significant strain due to high temperatures and water scarcity linked to the El Niño phenomenon. The Colombian Federation of Cattle Breeders (Fedegán) reported the deaths of 365 animals between June 1 and August 25, with over 1,000 animals being relocated to find food and water. Approximately 243,055 hectares in 35 municipalities have been affected.

Nationally, Fedegán estimates losses exceeding $75 billion pesos across 19 departments in recent months. Producers are facing increased costs as they move livestock to more viable areas to prevent further mortality.
