Colombia forensic institute identifies 205 earthquake victims

The National Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences has identified 205 victims following the magnitude 7.4 earthquake that occurred on August 10. While the national death toll exceeds 280, forensic teams continue the process of recognition and body restitution to families.

Forensic authorities have received 230 bodies from the departments of Chocó, Caldas, Risaralda, and Valle del Cauca. Among the identified victims, twelve are minors, including an infant aged four months. The age range of the deceased is broad, spanning from the infant to a 94-year-old woman.

Geographically, Pereira has processed the highest number of identifications with 88 cases, followed by Cali with 71. Other significant numbers of identifications were recorded in Quibdó (11), Buenaventura (8), and Roldanillo (6). The Institute is working alongside the Attorney General's Office to manage the restitution of remains across various municipal locations.
