Colombia funds major university expansion projects in Barranquilla and San Andrés

The Universidad del Atlántico in Barranquilla is undergoing a major campus modernization under the Integral Infrastructure Plan, with 125 billion Colombian pesos allocated to renovate the historic Santo Domingo building, add a new administrative block and a modern postgraduate facility. The upgrade will provide 77 classrooms, a library, data centre, cafeteria and other spaces, increasing capacity to serve more than 2,650 students and expanding postgraduate offerings in fields such as bilingualism, artificial intelligence and biotechnology.

In the Caribbean archipelago, the government’s promise to create the first public university for San Andrés and Providencia remains stalled. Although the project is budgeted at over 24 billion pesos, no land has been secured and construction has not begun due to cadastral, land‑use and legal hurdles, prompting local concern over delayed access to higher education.
