Colombia government initiates cultural counter-revolution

The administration of President Abelardo De La Espriella has signaled a shift in national policy by rebranding the Ministry of Culture to the Ministry of Culture and Heritage. This move is part of what the government describes as a “cultural counter-revolution” aimed at preventing the use of state institutions for indoctrination.

Under the leadership of newly appointed Minister Paola Holguín, the government has moved to remove symbols from previous administrations that it characterizes as “apology for terrorism.” These actions have sparked debate regarding the tension between the administration's ideological goals and the technical management of historical memory and national heritage. Additionally, the administration's religious leanings have raised questions about the boundaries between personal convictions and the secular nature of the State.
