Colombia earthquake: 7.4 magnitude tremor causes at least 181 deaths
A powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia on Monday, August 10, at 7:34 AM local time. The epicenter was located approximately five kilometers east of San José del Palmar in the Chocó department. The seismic event occurred at a depth of approximately 107 kilometers within the Nazca Plate, an intraplate event that allowed waves to be felt across a vast area, including Bogotá, Medellín, Cali, and parts of neighboring territories.
Reports indicate significant human and material impact. At least 181 people have been confirmed dead, with over 1,300 injured and numerous buildings collapsed. The Chocó region and the city of Pereira have reported high casualty counts. Following the main tremor, the Servicio Geológico Colombiano has recorded 93 aftershocks, including a 4.0 magnitude quake near the epicenter.
Geologists note that while the magnitude was substantial, the depth of the earthquake may have mitigated some of the potential surface destruction. However, the event is described as the strongest earthquake felt in Colombia in the last decade.
