Colombia honors rural traditions with Achira Day festival and Farmer’s Day audiovisual showcase

On June 20, the Huila department in Colombia celebrated the Day of the Achira, a traditional biscuit that symbolizes regional identity and supports a supply chain of farmers, producers and entrepreneurs. The event, institutionalized by Ordinance 12 of 2022, promotes the product’s Denominación de Origen and seeks national recognition in Congress, linking cultural preservation with economic development.

In Bogotá, the District Secretariat of Culture, Recreation and Sport hosted a free audiovisual exhibition on June 16 at Casa Kilele to mark the Day of the Farmer. The program featured five short films that presented the cultural richness, traditional knowledge and livelihoods of rural communities from Huila, Antioquia, Bolívar, Tolima and Santander. The films highlighted music, arriería, agricultural practices and other customs that form Colombia’s living heritage.
