Colombia implements measures to support vulnerable elderly populations

Authorities in Colombia are implementing targeted measures to support elderly populations facing economic vulnerability and social isolation.

In Dosquebradas, the Secretariat of Social and Political Development has launched a priority call to locate 41 beneficiaries of the 'Colombia Mayor' subsidy. These individuals must update their information or undergo verification to prevent the loss of their national government benefits. The municipality is providing assistance through its provisional Office for the Elderly and via WhatsApp to ensure continuity of support.

In Bogotá, Mayor Carlos Fernando Galán has initiated a door-to-door strategy to identify elderly citizens living in 'hidden poverty.' This phenomenon affects individuals in middle- and high-income neighborhoods, such as Teusaquillo, Chapinero, and Usaquén, who own homes but lack sufficient funds for food and utilities. As of September 18, the administration had conducted 457 visits across 14 localities, identifying 46 people in potential abandonment and activating 396 social services to connect them with community dining halls and care programs.
