Colombia protests erupt against President Abelardo de la Espriella

Colombia is experiencing significant social unrest as thousands of citizens, including unions, students, and indigenous groups, participate in nationwide protests against the administration of President Abelardo de la Espriella. Demonstrators are demanding protections for labor rights, education, and social reforms, while also expressing opposition to the government's diplomatic ties with Israel and the United States.

In response to the unrest, the government issued Decree 1525 of 2026, which modifies police protocols during demonstrations. The administration maintains the decree is intended to protect the population and ensure freedom of movement. However, critics and opposition lawmakers argue the measure allows security forces to intervene and detain individuals without first attempting dialogue or mediation, potentially facilitating the repression of social movements. Opposition groups have filed a lawsuit against the decree at the Consejo de Estado.

President de la Espriella has characterized the protesters as a small minority and stated that 98% of the demonstrations have been peaceful. Despite these claims, the government estimated that approximately 62,000 people participated in marches on October 14. The political tension is further heightened by the presence of former President Gustavo Petro at recent demonstrations.
