Colombia implements smart city technology for urban mobility and safety

Colombia is implementing advanced technological solutions to enhance urban mobility and public safety. Major cities, including Bogotá and Medellín, are testing smart streetlights equipped with advanced analysis cameras. These devices monitor air quality, detect electrical failures, and provide immediate sound alerts during emergencies. Additionally, sensors analyze vehicle flow to optimize traffic light timing and reduce congestion.

Security measures include video surveillance networks with algorithms capable of identifying stolen vehicle license plates in seconds. These systems allow command centers to receive automatic notifications regarding unusual movements in public spaces, enabling faster responses from security forces. Citizens can also participate via mobile applications to report infrastructure issues like potholes or damaged lighting.

In Valledupar, authorities have launched an automatic and semi-automatic traffic violation detection system to combat high rates of road accidents. Following a period of 49 fatalities and 221 injuries in 2026, the city is deploying cameras at strategic intersections. The initial phase is strictly pedagogical, offering educational warnings rather than financial penalties to encourage road safety awareness before moving to a full sanctioning phase.
