Colombia earthquake reconstruction: UNDP estimates $14 billion in damages

One month after the August 10 earthquake in Colombia, reconstruction and relief efforts are intensifying across affected departments including Valle del Cauca, Chocó, Risaralda, and Quindío. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) estimates total damages at approximately $14 billion, significantly higher than the Colombian government’s preliminary estimate of $9.5 billion. The UNDP emphasizes the need to build resilience and avoid reproducing existing vulnerabilities in infrastructure and basic services.

In Buenaventura, the Valle del Cauca administration has begun distributing 1,260 material kits for home repairs and announced plans for 200 new housing units. Simultaneously, the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD) has initiated temporary housing subsidies for families in Buenaventura and Roldanillo. However, administrative filters have left some funds unallocated; of $13.69 billion transferred by the UNGRD, approximately $8 billion has been cleared for use following validation processes.

Private sector support is also emerging. Banco Agrario de Colombia is refunding transaction fees for clients in affected areas where branches were temporarily closed. Additionally, SuperGiros has committed $15 billion to repair 620 homes for its employees, utilizing a model that employs local labor to stimulate the regional economy. Official reports indicate the disaster has impacted 45% of municipalities across 16 departments, affecting over 364,000 families.
