Colombia initiates recovery efforts following August earthquake
Colombia is navigating the economic and structural recovery following a major earthquake on August 10. The Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development is promoting nature tourism in affected regions, such as the Coffee Axis and the Pacific, to revitalize local economies and support thousands of families through green businesses.
In Antioquia, the government is managing 4.6 billion pesos to repair 65 damaged cultural sites across 41 municipalities, including the Casa de la Música in Sonsón. Meanwhile, in Tolima, officials confirmed that the Teatro Tolima sustained no structural damage, though 400 million pesos will be invested in facade maintenance and internal upgrades.

While the disaster caused an immediate drop in consumption—with some regions seeing contractions as high as 49.6%—the reconstruction process is expected to potentially add 0.2% to the annual economic growth. However, the fiscal burden of reconstruction and emergency response could increase the fiscal deficit by 0.7% to 1.3% of the GDP for 2026 and 2027.
