Colombia intelligence report says Gulf Clan expands during peace talks

Colombian intelligence agencies warned that the Gulf Clan (Clan del Golfo) has strengthened and broadened its territorial presence while national peace negotiations were underway. The report, based on intercepted communications, confidential documents and human‑source testimony, says the criminal group used the dialogue process to reorganize, recruit new members, absorb regional gangs and secure strategic drug‑trafficking corridors, as well as expand into illegal mining and extortion.

Authorities note the cartel also enhanced its intelligence networks, hired hitmen for selective killings and increased surveillance of police and communities under its influence. Despite the ongoing talks, the organization has not curtailed its illegal activities or reduced its military capacity; instead it has consolidated economic power and control over strategic municipalities. The findings emerge amid debate over the future of Colombia's "total peace" policy and recent government decisions regarding the continuation of talks with the Gulf Clan.
