Colombia: President ends peace talks and launches military operations
Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella has formally terminated peace negotiations with several armed groups, including the Estado Mayor de los Bloques Magdalena Medio (EMBF), the Coordinadora Nacional Ejército Bolivariano (CNEB), and the Autodefensas Conquistadores de la Sierra Nevada (ACSN). The decision, enacted through multiple resolutions, cites a lack of genuine willingness to reach peace agreements from these factions.
Simultaneously, the government has shifted toward a more aggressive military stance. In Guaviare, Operación Militar Azarías targeted the Frente Carolina Ramírez, resulting in at least eight combatants killed and three captured. This follows a separate operation in El Retorno that left ten dead, including three minors. Authorities are also investigating whether high-profile leader alias ‘El Tigre’ was among the casualties.
In other developments, the Estado Mayor Central (EMC) has claimed responsibility for the kidnapping of Colombian soldier José Olger Melo Charry in Nariño, asserting that the soldier remains in good health. Additionally, Colombian forces reported a significant narcotics blow, seizing over 4.6 tons of cocaine and 22 kilograms of THC between August 11 and August 30, 2026.
