Colombia Investigates Two Femicide Murders in Tolima and Medellín

In the municipality of El Líbano, Tolima, 26‑year‑old María Alejandra Castaño Bermúdez was found dead at Hospital Regional Alfonso Jaramillo Salazar with multiple stab wounds. Authorities are treating the case as a femicide and have identified her former partner, Brayan Lara, as the suspect; he reportedly presented himself to investigators voluntarily. The community, grieving a mother of a five‑year‑old child, has called for justice, and the municipal government pledged institutional support and cooperation with the Fiscalía General de la Nación and the National Police.

In San Antonio de Prado, Medellín, 20‑year‑old Venezuelan María Fernanda López Castellanos was shot six times inside her home on 24 July. The homicide is also being investigated as a femicide. Police have arrested Víctor Alfonso Taborda Taborda, a 41‑year‑old retired army soldier, who is expected to appear before a control judge. The killing has reignited concerns over gender‑based violence and control‑related crimes in Colombia.
