Colombia joins A3C coalition amid earthquake relief controversy

Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella is implementing a significant shift in foreign policy while the nation grapples with a devastating earthquake. In Panama City, Colombia officially joined the Coalition Against the Cartels of the Americas (A3C), also known as the ‘Shield of the Americas’. As the 19th member of the alliance established by US President Donald Trump, Colombia has deepened its military cooperation with the United States to combat drug trafficking and transnational organized crime.

Simultaneously, the administration is facing intense domestic criticism regarding its response to a major earthquake in Pereira. While volunteers and private organizations work to locate survivors in the rubble, the government has reportedly declined offers of international rescue teams from countries including Mexico, Brazil, China, and Spain, opting to accept only financial aid and supplies. Critics argue that the state's refusal to allow foreign emergency personnel is hindering relief efforts during the critical window for finding survivors.
