Colombia joins Geneva Consensus anti-abortion coalition

Colombia has officially joined the Geneva Consensus, an international political coalition of more than 40 states that maintains there is no international right to abortion. Alejandro Ordóñez, Colombia’s ambassador to the Organization of American States (OAS), confirmed the decision, noting that the move is political in nature and carries no legal weight. Consequently, the adhesion does not alter the 2022 Constitutional Court ruling (C-055) which decriminalized abortion in Colombia up to 24 weeks.

The decision has sparked significant political debate. Progressive sectors and members of the Pacto Histórico party have criticized the move, arguing it aligns the country with regressive international agendas and undermines hard-won reproductive rights. Critics also questioned the prioritization of a symbolic declaration while the nation faces security, migration, and narcotics challenges. Colombia had previously joined the coalition in 2022 before withdrawing later that same year.
