Colombia launches conservation initiative for Orinoco crocodile

Colombia has launched a renewed effort to recover the Orinoco crocodile (Crocodylus intermedius), a species currently classified as critically endangered. The Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, alongside academic institutions, research institutes, and social organizations, has signed a commitment to strengthen the National Program for the Conservation of the Orinoco Crocodile (PROCAIMÁN).

The initiative focuses on increasing releases, improving monitoring, and ensuring the welfare of specimens. Recent actions included the release of 17 crocodiles at the Wisirare Biopark in Casanare. The long-term goal is to establish stable, self-sustaining wild populations that no longer require human-assisted releases.

Historically, the species has been decimated by commercial hunting, but it now faces additional threats such as habitat transformation, nesting site alteration, and accidental capture. The conservation strategy incorporates environmental education for local communities and the development of bioeconomy alternatives to support ecosystem preservation.
