Colombia launches health shock plan for one million patients
The Colombian government has launched a 'health shock plan' to address a massive backlog of medical services and medications. President Abelardo de la Espriella announced the extraordinary and temporary measure to assist over one million patients identified through data analysis and complaints.
The plan identifies approximately 1,069,196 users with pending care, including more than 700,000 awaiting medications and over 300,000 awaiting medical procedures. Priority will be given to patients with high-risk clinical conditions, such as those suffering from cancer, HIV, orphan diseases, neurodegenerative disorders, and diabetes, as well as pregnant women requiring essential treatments.
To finance this initiative, the government is implementing an extraordinary debt purchase mechanism featuring 0% interest and a one-year grace period. The strategy involves a four-step process: identifying the patient and pending service, determining the responsible entity, unlocking necessary resources, and following up to ensure the service is effectively received. The first phase aims to provide national coverage between September and December 2026.
