Colombia launches i4Plas digital transformation center for plastic industry

Acoplásticos, the Institute for Training and Research of Plastic and Rubber (ICIPC), and KERN IoP are launching i4Plas, the first Digital Transformation Center for the plastic industry in Latin America. Located in Colombia, the center is designed to guide plastic transformation companies toward Industry 4.0 standards.

The initiative addresses rising energy costs, the need for increased productivity, and a shortage of specialized digital talent. i4Plas will utilize applied research, industrial pilots, and technical training to implement technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), robotics, digital twins, additive manufacturing, and artificial intelligence.

A study conducted by Acoplásticos with support from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) highlighted that while the sector has diverse machinery, it faces innovation barriers including high costs, limited financing, and restricted access to technology and training. The center aims to improve international competitiveness and sustainability within the national industry.
