Urano Joint Task Force reactivated to combat fuel theft and armed groups in Colombia

President Abelardo de la Espriella has reactivated the Urano Joint Task Force to combat organized crime and illegal economies in the Cesar department and the Magdalena Medio region. Headquartered in Aguachica, the unit integrates the Army, Air Force, Navy, Police, and intelligence agencies to target groups such as the ELN and Clan del Golfo.

A primary objective of the task force is to halt the theft of gasoline and diesel from pipelines, which the government asserts fuels cocaine production, illegal mining, and terrorist activities. Since September 1, authorities report the recovery of over 100,000 gallons of stolen fuel and the arrest of 21 individuals related to hydrocarbon crimes.

The move signals a shift in national security strategy, moving away from previous peace negotiations toward direct military and police offensives against armed groups.
