Colombia: Leaders criticize FARC peace agreement 10 years after plebiscite
Ten years after the Colombian peace plebiscite, political leaders from the Centro Democrático party are criticizing the implementation of the agreement with the FARC. Senator Hernán Cadavid argued that the vote for ‘No’ was ignored by the government at the time, leading to what he describes as “absolute impunity” for the guerrilla group.
Cadavid stated that the victims have not been the central focus of the process as promised and criticized the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP). Former President Álvaro Uribe Vélez also expressed concerns regarding the peace process, noting a significant increase in cocaine production and drug trafficking. Uribe claimed that cocaine entering the market rose from 150 tons in 2010 to 2,100 tons in 2024, linking this growth to increased violence in various regions. He further criticized the JEP, suggesting that members of the military forces have been negatively affected by transitional justice decisions.
