Colombia legalises detention of former La Guajira governor Hernando Deluque

Colombia's First Instance Chamber authorized the detention of former La Guajira governor Hernando Deluque Freyle after the Supreme Court upheld a seven‑year prison sentence. The capture order was issued on 22 July, following Deluque's conviction for signing a 2.1 million‑peso contract for water and sewer projects that never materialised, with an advance payment exceeding 1.05 million pesos.

Magistrate Jorge Emilio Caldas confirmed that Deluque's legal rights were communicated and that fundamental guarantees were respected during the arrest, which took place at the SIJIN facility with CTI agents present. The Supreme Court found no procedural violations and issued a custody order to place Deluque in a prison to serve his sentence.
