Colombia Congress approves 2027 budget project in first debate
The economic commissions of the Colombian Congress have approved the 2027 General National Budget project in its first debate. The proposed budget is valued at approximately $634.9 trillion pesos.
A central point of contention is the proposed reduction of $170,000 million for the Integral System of Truth, Justice, Reparation and Non-Repetition, which includes the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP). JEP President Alejandro Ramelli has warned that these cuts could compromise the tribunal's independence and autonomy.
Additionally, the budget project includes a significant increase in public debt service, projected to rise from $100.5 trillion pesos in 2026 to $155.4 trillion pesos in 2027. While some sectors face cuts, others are slated for increases, such as a $2 trillion peso addition to the Health and Social Protection sector and $100,000 million for the Judicial Branch.
Legislative efforts are also underway to limit the JEP's lifespan. Senator Enrique Gómez has filed a project to modify the Constitution to ensure the JEP's functions do not extend beyond March 2028.
