Colombia lifts nationwide suspension on firearm carry permits
President Abelardo De la Espriella has signed Decree 1368, lifting the nationwide suspension on permits to carry firearms in Colombia. This measure effectively nullifies Decree 2515, which had prohibited the carrying and possession of firearms since December 2015 following peace negotiations with the FARC.
The new decree restores the effectiveness of valid individual carry permits and eliminates the requirement for holders to process additional special authorizations from military authorities. While the decree reactivates the ability to carry weapons for protection, it does not establish a model of indiscriminate acquisition; the state maintains its monopoly on firearms regulation.
Proponents of the measure suggest it addresses security gaps faced by citizens exposed to organized crime, extortion, and kidnapping. The policy aims to provide means of defense for those in high-risk sectors, though it remains subject to the regulatory framework of the Ministry of National Defense.
