Colombia lifts suspension on legal weapon carrying

The Colombian government has decided to lift the suspension on the legal carrying of weapons, a move supported by agricultural sectors facing high levels of insecurity. Proponents argue the decision addresses the vulnerability of rural producers, such as cattle ranchers, who face kidnapping, extortion, murder, and theft in areas where state presence is often insufficient.

Reports from the Colombia Ganadera Foundation (FUNDAGÁN) have documented over 10,000 victims of armed groups. Supporters of the measure note that while previous demobilizations of groups like the Autodefensas and the FARC left power vacuums, the current policy aims to restore the right to self-defense for law-abiding citizens. The measure is intended to include strict requirements, controls, and legal responsibilities to prevent indiscriminate armament.
