Colombia manages earthquake recovery and forest fires

Colombia is managing a multi-faceted emergency following a 7.4 magnitude earthquake that has resulted in at least 294 deaths and hundreds of missing persons. The disaster has heavily impacted departments such as Chocó, Valle, and Risaralda, with 437 municipalities reporting emergencies.

President Abelardo de la Espriella has announced a reconstruction strategy for the Chocó region, dubbed the ‘Plan Marshall’, which includes appointing a special manager to coordinate the rebuilding of schools, housing, and connectivity. Simultaneously, the country is battling 32 active forest fires, particularly in Tolima, which have already consumed over 5,000 hectares.

Political controversy has emerged regarding the initial response. Former UNGRD director Javier Pava issued a certification stating that international rescue teams were not required in the immediate aftermath, a decision that delayed the arrival of specialized teams from Israel, the United States, and El Salvador. Meanwhile, the private sector has reportedly raised over 201 billion Colombian pesos to assist victims.
