Colombia earthquake response: death toll rises as international aid arrives
A 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck Colombia on August 10, causing widespread destruction and leaving at least 265 people dead and hundreds missing. As the critical 72-hour survival window for trapped individuals narrows, rescue efforts in cities like Cali and Pereira are transitioning from active search-and-rescue to debris removal.
President Abelardo De La Espriella has announced plans to declare an economic emergency and establish a reconstruction fund. Amidst controversy regarding initial delays in accepting international assistance, Chancellor Omar Bula denied that the government rejected aid for political reasons, stating that cooperation is being managed openly.
International aid is arriving from several nations: El Salvador has delivered approximately 100 tons of supplies, Chile has sent 10 tons of humanitarian aid and medicine, and Peru has authorized a donation of goods. Additionally, CONMEBOL and the Colombian Football Federation (FCF) have pledged a joint donation of $1 million for reconstruction efforts. Local athletes have also participated in relief work, including footballer Jhon Arias, who personally funded an aircraft with medical supplies.
