Colombia mandates fortification of staple foods to combat nutrient deficiencies

The Colombian government has issued Decree 380 of 2026, mandating the fortification of staple foods with essential vitamins and minerals. This measure targets rice, corn flour, and wheat flour to combat widespread micronutrient deficiencies across the population.

According to the Ministry of Health, the initiative addresses critical nutritional gaps, noting that up to 36% of preschoolers suffer from zinc deficiency and 44.5% of pregnant women experience anemia due to iron deficiency. The government has stated that the fortification process will be controlled to ensure safety and absorption without altering the taste, smell, or appearance of the food products.
