Colombia Ministry of Labor proposes social security reforms
Colombia's Ministry of Labor, led by Minister Natalia López Fuentes, has proposed a new technical route to simplify social security enrollment. The proposal aims to create a single unified process for affiliation to health, pensions, and occupational risks, centralizing administrative tasks and improving interoperability. This initiative seeks to reduce bureaucratic burdens for millions of workers without altering existing contribution regulations.
Additionally, the Ministry announced plans to lift state interventions on 11 family compensation funds (cajas de compensación). Working alongside the Superintendency of Family Subsidies, the government is conducting individual technical evaluations of these entities' financial and operational statuses to restore their administrative autonomy.
To support the sector, the Ministry is also structuring a new bill designed to provide legal certainty to these funds, clarify the competencies of the Superintendency of Family Subsidies, and ensure institutional support for legal obligations, following previous rulings by the Constitutional Court.
