Colombia’s Vice President‑Elect José Manuel Restrepo meets US Congress and Secretary of State Marco Rubio

José Manuel Restrepo, the incoming vice president of Colombia, led a delegation to Washington to meet bipartisan members of the US Congress. Senators and representatives from both parties, including Chris Coons, Henry Cuéllar and Bernie Moreno, expressed continued bipartisan support for Colombia as the country prepares for the inauguration of President‑elect Abelardo de la Espriella on 7 August. The talks emphasized cooperation on investment, security and employment, and highlighted Colombia’s desire to deepen the bilateral partnership.

Restrepo also held a 45‑minute meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The discussion focused on Colombia’s intention to join the “Escudo de las Américas” security initiative, cooperation on intelligence, anti‑narcotics operations and other transnational crime challenges, while reaffirming respect for Colombian sovereignty. Economic topics such as expanding trade, attracting US investment and supporting Colombia’s growth were also on the agenda. The delegation’s Washington visit included meetings with multilateral institutions to secure financing ahead of the new administration’s term.
