Colombia moves to ease prison overcrowding with conditional release bill

Colombia’s prison system is facing a record‑high level of overcrowding, with facilities operating well beyond their designed capacity. The crisis has drawn concern from authorities, human‑rights groups and the judiciary over the conditions endured by thousands of inmates.

In response, the Colombian Congress is advancing a legislative proposal aimed at reducing congestion by speeding up the granting of conditional releases. The bill seeks to eliminate administrative delays that keep eligible prisoners incarcerated longer than necessary, streamline coordination among judges, prison officials and monitoring agencies, and cut state costs while safeguarding victims’ rights.
